A Family Vision is a short, meaningful statement that reflects your family’s values, goals, and the kind of atmosphere you want to cultivate at home.
It serves as your compass, especially when life gets tough.
✅ Why Do This?
Research consistently shows that families with a shared vision:
-
Communicate better
-
Resolve conflict more peacefully
-
Build stronger emotional bonds
-
Raise children with clearer values and purpose
⏱️ How Long Does It Take?
You only need 30–60 minutes.
Set aside a relaxed evening where everyone is free. Grab some snacks, sit in the living room, and make it a family experience. Even young children can contribute!
Here’s how to do it in a meaningful and practical way:
Step 1: Create the Right Environment
Make it a special moment. Gather the family together with minimal distractions. Sit somewhere comfortable and have pens and paper ready. You can even put some nashids and have snacks.
Step 2: Ask Reflective Questions
Use prompts like:
-
What kind of family do we want to be?
-
What do we value most?
-
How do we want to treat each other?
-
What brings us joy as a family?
-
What habits should we build or change?
-
What do we want our children to grow up remembering?
Let everyone share, even little ones.
Step 3: Capture Key Words and Themes
As each person speaks, note the key words or phrases that repeat, e.g., "kindness", "fun", "honesty", "Islam", "togetherness", "learning", etc.
Step 4: Draft Your Vision Statement
Now, combine your ideas into 2–4 short sentences.
Examples:
🏡 “In our family, we listen, we forgive, we try again. We put Allah first, and we lift each other up.”
💬 “We choose kindness, honesty, and hard work. We laugh often. We speak the truth even when it's hard.”
You don’t have to make it perfect, you can always improve it later.
Step 5: Display and Revisit It
Once finalised, write it up nicely and hang it somewhere visible, on the fridge, living room wall, or inside a family folder. Revisit it once every few months, and reflect on how close you are to making your family vision a reality.
