The Definitive Guide to Making The Most of Summer With Your Children

The summer holidays are upon us, providing a golden opportunity to reconnect with our children, strengthen family bonds and create memories they will cherish for years to come.

Here are ten practical ways to make this summer meaningful, enjoyable and memorable:

1. Have a plan

Do not allow the holidays to simply drift by. Plan family days out, activities at home, games, creative projects and other enjoyable experiences.

Better still, involve your children in the planning. When they feel included, they are more likely to be excited and cooperative.

2. Manage screen time

Decide in advance how much screen time your children will receive, when they can have it and what conditions must be met beforehand.

Communicate these boundaries clearly and remain consistent. This can reduce arguments and prevent devices from stealing their entire summer.

3. Keep learning alive

School and madrasah may be closed, but learning does not need to stop.

Encourage regular reading, Qur’an revision, educational videos, practical life skills or simple lessons taught by you. Keep it light and enjoyable so that learning does not feel like a punishment.

4. Encourage outdoor play

Spending time outdoors is an important part of childhood.

While safety must always be considered, create opportunities for your children to visit the park, play in the garden, explore nature, go to the beach or participate in outdoor activities.

Let them reconnect with the real world rather than experiencing everything through a screen.

5. Allow them to be bored

You do not need to entertain your children every moment of the day or fill every gap in their schedule.

Some boredom is healthy. It encourages children to use their imagination, develop creativity and learn how to occupy themselves without constantly relying on screens or adults.

Give them space to invent games, draw, build, read, explore or decide for themselves what to do. A memorable summer needs some structure, but it does not need to be scheduled every minute.

6. Make time to talk

Set aside some time each day to simply sit and speak with your children.

Ask about their thoughts, interests, worries and experiences. Listen without immediately judging, correcting or turning every conversation into a lecture.

Children who become comfortable speaking to their parents when they are young are more likely to continue doing so as they grow older.

7. Strengthen family ties

Use the holidays to teach your children the importance of maintaining family relationships.

Invite relatives to your home and take your children to visit grandparents, cousins and extended family. The relationships you prioritise today are often the ones your children will value tomorrow.

8. Be aware of their friendships

Pay attention to whom your children are spending their time with, where they are going and what they are doing together.

Friends can have a powerful influence on a child’s language, behaviour, interests and habits. Good friendships can encourage positive development, while harmful friendships can introduce attitudes and habits that are difficult to undo.

Take an interest without making your children feel that they are constantly being watched. Create a home where their friends are welcome, get to know their families where possible and keep communication open.

9. Travel together where possible

Travelling as a family can create some of the most powerful childhood memories.

It does not need to involve an expensive holiday abroad. A short road trip, a day trip to another city or exploring somewhere new within the UK can be equally meaningful.

Travelling also allows you to see how your children respond to new people, places and situations, giving you valuable opportunities to guide them.

10. Protect your own wellbeing

Having the children at home throughout the day can be physically and emotionally demanding, particularly for mothers who may carry most of the daily responsibilities.

Parents should agree in advance how childcare will be shared so that each person has an opportunity to rest, recharge and attend to their own needs.

Looking after yourself will help you care for your family with greater patience.

Summer does not need to be perfect or expensive to be special.

What children often remember most is not how much money was spent, but the laughter, conversations, adventures and undivided attention they received from their parents.
